Barbecue at the Quakertown Fire Company

Sunday, 8 February 2026

The announcement for the Quakertown Fire Company's Superbowl Barbecue

popped up in my mailbox. The January event was canceled by heavy snow.
So I eagerly made a pre-order, marked my calendar, planned for photo shoot.

We got to the fire station right about noon. The ribs were done -
the pit crew had started at 7:00 a.m. I venture to guess that with
the temperature at that time being around 3 degrees Fahrenheit

the burning charcoal was welcome for more than just cooking ribs.

Chicken still on the grill, wings that have optional dipping sauces.

When ready the wings are rushed to the building, foil covered to foil the cold.

This is how it works. Most people pre-order so as to get what they want: rack of ribs or a half rack. Dozen wings,
maybe more. Dipping sauce (I really like the mango habanero.) Brisket sandwich. Baked beans. Cole slaw. Soup.

Into the social hall and slowly shuffle up to the cashier. Confirm order. Prepaid? If not pay now. Wait to be called up.

.
It's busy back in the kitchen. Barely enough space for a man to turn around what with all the people and equipment
from slow cookers and Instantpots, electric cords dangling everywhere, orders being assembled and bagged up.

Crab soup being carefully ladled into a container.

Cleanliness is important. Wings transport container being thoroughly scrubbed.

.

Home. Table set with the usual dishes etc. Also some wet but wrung out washcloths
needed to wipe hands and mouths. Come on, surely you know ribs are finger food!
.
Sides provided along with the ribs are baked beans and coleslaw. In addition

I made a dish of home fries. They go just as well with ribs as with anything.

As you can see we were eager eaters. The half rack of ribs were gnawed pretty clean. The other half
rack will be another meal. A spoonful or so of beans remains, coleslaw and home fries (and beer) gone.

Our thanks to the volunteers of the Quakertown Fire Company.
They serve the community with professional emergency services when needed.
And feed us too.
